Passage 1
The First Snow
The first snow came. How beautiful it was, falling so silently all day long, all night long, on the mountains, on the meadows, on the roofs of the living, on the graves of the dead! All white save the river, and the leafless trees that against the leaden sky now revealed fully the wonderful beauty. Every sound was muffled, every noise changed to something soft and musical. Only the chiming of sleigh-bell, beating as swift and merrily as the hearts of children.

Passage 2:
If I Were A Boy Again
If I were a boy again, I would practise perseverance oftener, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness.
Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results. “There are only two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids---the eagle and the snail”.
If I were a boy again, I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once.
If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it. It smiles back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.
Passage 3
Choosing An Occupation
In my opinion a man’s first duty is to find a way of supporting himself, so as to relieve other people of the necessity of supporting him. Moreover, the learning to do work of practical value in the world, in an exact and careful manner, is of itself a very important education. The habit of doing that which you do not care about when you would rather do something else, is invaluable. It would have saved me a frightful waste of time if I had ever had it drilled into me in youth.
Success in any scientific career requires an unusual equipment of capacity, industry, and energy. If you possess that equipment, you will find leisure enough after your daily commercial work is over, to make an opening in the scientific ranks for yourself.
Education
Parents have to do much less for their children today than they used to do, and home has become much less of a workshop. Clothes can be bought ready-made, washing can go to the laundry; food can be bought cooked, canned and preserved; bread is baked and delivered by the baker; milk arrives on the doorstep; meals can be had at the restaurant the worker’s canteen, and the school dinning-room.
It is unusual for father to pursue his trade or other employment at home, and his children rarely, if ever, see him at his place of work. Boys are therefore seldom trained to follow their father’s occupation, and in many towns they have a fairly wide choice of employment and so do girls. The young wage-earner often earns good money, and soon acquires a feeling of economic independence.
